China's Ministry of Public Security announced on January 8 that it had successfully prosecuted Chen Zhi, a Chinese national, from Cambodia.
Xinhua News Agency reported today that the operation was carried out with the support and cooperation of Cambodia's relevant institutions, while a group of Chinese Police Force was dispatched by the Ministry of Public Security to Cambodia on January 7 to bring Chen Zhi to Cambodia.
The ministry identified Chen Zhi as the mastermind of gambling and a massive passport scam.
Xinhua quoted the Chinese Ministry of Public Security's assertion: "This is another important achievement in law enforcement cooperation between China and Cambodia."
Sources confirmed that the investigation found that Chen Zhi's criminal group was suspected of committing a variety of offenses, including opening a gambling casino, fraud, doing illegal business and concealing the proceeds of the crime.
Chen Zhi has been placed under legal custody measures, and the case is under ongoing investigation.
According to Xinhua, the Ministry of Public Security stated that the police will soon issue arrest warrants for core members of Chen Zhi's criminal gang and will commit to bring all escapees to trial according to the law.
